Reflection of International Mathematics Studies

Mathematics is one of a subject that have to be teach in all countries. Each country have different characteristics in teaching mathematics. Based on the tittle presentation (Mathematical Modeling and Mathematical Education – What, why and how?) by Dr. Max Stephens from the University of Melbourne told that the appropriate modeling task to introducing real word modeling tasks are the importance of using models based on experience and motivation. Modelling is a powerful vehicle for not only promoting students’ understanding of a wide range of key mathematical and scientific concepts, but also for helping them appreciate the potential of the mathematical sciences as a critical tool for analysing important issues in their lives, communities, and society in general (Greer, Verschaffel, & Mukhopadhyay, 2007).
Lyn English identified competencies that are now seen as important for productive and innovative work practices, one of them is problem solving. In the problem solving consist of working collaboratively on complex problems where planning, overseeing, moderating, and communicating are essential elements for success. Mathematical modelling as activities that improve the student ability to solve the problem with many method appropriate the student creativity.
The role of teacher to construct and improve the students’ thinking of modelling by using outside school (by scientists) and school mathematics (by students). My lecturer said that in Japan used indirect teaching, Japanese can’t construct, and authoritative, different with Indonesia that still looking for identity, understand for a moment, have tolerant with other countries, and until the end of period they will not have characteristic.
Monday, 12 March  2012, Prof. Mohan Chinnappan PhD from India told to us to be teacher we not only cover the content but also the pedagogy. Good teacher have many ways to be able to teach. He said that mathematics can do anything in our knowledge. The important thing that the students learn from primary to secondary school is pattern. Mathematics is tools  to make less the  sensibility around the world. Mathematics is communicating and investigation. Mathematics can use for a lot of thing. Mathematics is tools to understand the world.
The function or useful of numbers are to count, to compare, to measure quantity, to emphasize more sophisticated, and  etc. The meaning of Al-Qur’an can’t be change , the content have to be the same even in different words same as mathematics. That statement shows that there is relationship between religious knowledge and mathematical knowledge. The culture of Indonesian at Mathematics knowledge are count the days of people died, how people built the Borobudur temple, etc.
In Australia, the teacher handle the student that not smart by : built private school, make different level of class ( smart and not smart), and there is no increment class (streaming). The characteristics of school in Australia are secular-liberal democracy-can follow individual live, normal curriculum, public school, private school : more religious. The use of lesson study is to optimize the lesson with concentrate and emphasize the students’ activities.
The summary from the lecture, Prof. Mohan, are :
  1. We need always to rationalize all activities in teach our subject in the class, be able to explain what the phenomena of teaching learning program
  2. Developing teaching professionally, how we develop teacher at the school
  3. Need to understand theory and philosophy
  4. Power of culture (characteristic Javanese) and mathematics
  5. Explanation some aspect to manage the different students’ competence in mathematics (system)

The last, hope the teacher in the next decade can make students love Mathematics by combining many method.
